Finding Meaning in Life: Beyond Goals and Productivity
When achievement stops meaning anything
There’s a particular kind of emptiness that arrives after you get what you were chasing. The goal lands, and instead of the fullness you expected, there’s a strange flatness, and then the immediate reach for the next goal, as if momentum could substitute for meaning.
I sit with a lot of people who are stuck in exactly this loop. High-functioning, accomplished, and quietly starving. They’ve been told that meaning is a byproduct of achievement, hit enough goals, be productive enough, and a meaningful life will assemble itself. It doesn’t. Finding meaning in life is a different project than achieving things, and confusing the two is why so many successful people feel so hollow.
Why the productivity treadmill can’t deliver it
Productivity is about doing more, faster. Meaning is about mattering. Those are not the same axis, and no amount of movement along the first one gets you anywhere on the second.
The treadmill promises that meaning is always one accomplishment away. So you keep running, and the finish line keeps moving, and the running itself becomes the identity. Eventually you can’t stop, not because you’re close, but because stopping would mean feeling the emptiness the running was covering.
I remember hitting a milestone I’d chased for a long time and feeling, instead of the fullness I’d been promised, a strange flat quiet. That emptiness unsettled me more than any failure had. It was the moment I understood that meaning was never going to arrive from the next achievement, I’d been drawing from a well that was always going to be dry.
Here’s the quiet truth underneath it: the emptiness isn’t a sign you haven’t done enough. It’s a sign you’ve been sourcing meaning from the wrong place.
Where meaning actually comes from
In my experience, living it and sitting with hundreds of people through it, meaning comes from three places, none of which are on the productivity treadmill:
- Expression, not accumulation. Meaning shows up when you’re expressing something true through what you do, not when you’re piling up outcomes. The same task feels meaningful or meaningless depending on whether your real self is in it.
- Connection, not performance. Being genuinely met by another person, and genuinely meeting them, generates more meaning than any achievement. Most of us trade this for a performance of connection and wonder why we’re lonely in a full room.
- Contact with something larger. Meaning deepens when you feel part of something bigger than your own story: nature, the sacred, the sweep of being alive at all. The productivity mind mocks this as soft. The starving heart knows better.
Notice that all three are about frequency and presence, not accomplishment. You can have a wildly productive life with none of them, and a quiet life saturated with all three.
Meaning as a practice, not a possession
This is why the Gene Keys approach meaning through contemplation rather than goal-setting. Contemplation is the opposite of the treadmill: instead of doing more, you sit with what’s already here until it reveals its depth. Richard Rudd’s art of contemplation is essentially a technology for finding meaning in your actual life rather than in an imagined future one.
The system maps meaning onto your specific design. Your core gift is where your most natural expression lives, and expression, remember, is one of the three sources. When you’re expressing your real gift, work stops being productivity and becomes meaning. When you’re grinding against your shadow, even success feels empty. Same effort, entirely different frequency.
A gentler way to rebuild it
If you’re in the flat, meaningless stretch, here’s what I’d offer, not a productivity hack, the opposite:
- Slow down enough to feel the emptiness. You can’t find meaning while sprinting past the very feeling that’s trying to redirect you. Stop long enough to let it speak.
- Ask where you’re expressing vs. performing. Look at your week honestly. Where is the real you actually present? Where are you just executing? Meaning lives in the first column.
- Contemplate one Gene Key. Pull your profile, take your Life’s Work key, and sit with it for a week, not to achieve anything, just to let it deepen your read on your own life. This is finding meaning by going down, not forward.
- Reinvest in connection and awe. One real conversation. One walk where you actually look up. Meaning is often not missing, just crowded out by productivity.
The reframe
Finding meaning in life was never going to come from doing more. It comes from a change in frequency, from performance to expression, from accumulation to presence, from chasing the next thing to being genuinely here for this one.
You don’t have to earn a meaningful life by achieving your way to it. You have to stop long enough to live the one that’s already, quietly, trying to happen through you.
