Decisions You Don't Regret: Trusting Your Inner Authority
Why good decision-makers still get it wrong
You can be smart, informed, and thoughtful and still make decisions you regret. Not because you didn’t think hard enough, often because you thought too hard, in the wrong faculty. You built a pro-and-con list, consulted everyone, ran the logic, made the “sensible” choice, and something in you knew, quietly, that it was wrong before you’d even finished.
Human design has one of the most practical tools I know for this. It’s called your inner authority: the specific place in you where your true decisions are actually made. And here’s the catch that explains a lifetime of regretted choices: for most people, it’s not the mind.
The mind is a terrible decider
The mind is brilliant at gathering information, analyzing, and strategizing. It’s genuinely bad at deciding, because it decides based on fear, other people’s opinions, and what should be right. It will talk you into things that look correct on paper and feel wrong in your body, and talk you out of things that scare it but are true.
This is why overthinking rarely produces good decisions. More analysis just gives the fearful mind more material to argue with itself. The decision doesn’t get clearer; it gets louder.
The decisions I most regret all share one thing: I made them from my head, talking myself into what looked sensible while something quieter in my body was saying no. The ones I’ve never regretted often made little logical sense on paper, but they came from that deeper signal, and I knew, even when they were hard, that they were truly mine.
Your inner authority, by type
Human design says your reliable decision-making signal lives somewhere specific, and it differs by person. The main authorities:
- Emotional authority. You’re not meant to decide in the moment at all. Clarity comes over time, across an emotional wave. Sleep on it. Your truth on day three is more reliable than your excitement on day one.
- Sacral authority, your gut gives an immediate yes or no, felt as an expansion or contraction before the mind speaks. Your body knows instantly; the trick is catching it before you override it.
- Splenic authority: a quiet, in-the-moment intuition that speaks once, softly. Miss it and it’s gone. Learning to trust the first quiet hit is the whole practice.
- Other authorities (ego, self-projected, environmental/lunar) each have their own mechanics, but all of them share one thing: none of them is the reasoning mind.
Knowing which is yours changes everything, because you stop applying the wrong tool. If you have emotional authority, every “decide right now” pressure is working against your design. If you have sacral authority, every long deliberation is drowning out the gut that already answered.
Decisions in relationship
Authority isn’t only personal. It shapes how you decide together. Two partners with different authorities will clash over pace: one needs to sleep on it, the other knew instantly. Neither is wrong; they’re built differently. Understanding this is a big part of human design compatibility, and it dissolves a surprising number of recurring fights.
The Gene Keys layer: the shadow in your decisions
The Gene Keys add depth here. Poor decisions often come from making choices in the Shadow frequency, from fear, reactivity, or the need for approval. The same choice made from the Gift frequency, steadier, clearer, less afraid, comes out differently.
So there are really two questions for any decision: am I using my correct authority (the right faculty)? and am I deciding from the Shadow or the Gift (the right frequency)? Get both right and regret becomes rare. Not because you always pick the “successful” option, but because you chose from your truth, and choices made from truth don’t generate the specific ache of regret, even when they’re hard.
How to practice it
- Find your authority. Pull your free profile and identify your inner authority. This alone reframes how you should be making every significant choice.
- Match your process to your design. Emotional? Build in time. Sacral? Catch the gut response before the mind edits it. Splenic? Honor the first quiet hit.
- Notice the frequency. Before a big call, check: am I deciding from fear or from clarity? If it’s fear, wait if you can. Fear is a bad advisor wearing an urgent voice.
- Keep a decision log. Track a few decisions, how you made them, and how they landed. You’ll quickly see the pattern, head-and-fear decisions regretted, authority-and-clarity decisions not.
The freedom of it
The goal was never to make perfect decisions. It’s to make decisions you can stand behind, choices that came from your real signal, so that even when they’re hard you don’t lie awake second-guessing them.
That’s what trusting your inner authority gives you: not a crystal ball, but a way of choosing that leaves no residue. You decided as yourself. And decisions made as yourself are the ones you don’t regret.
