Happy Birthday

Your 7!

A year of trying out leading without being the loudest voice in the room.

Somebody who loves your family sent you this page. Happy birthday to your little one.

There are 64 Gene Keys, and every age up to 64 has one waiting for it. This year's is Gene Key 7.

Your child just turned 7. Look back at the year behind them: real friendships forming, favorite people picked, secrets starting to matter. Six was about getting along. Seven is about what your child does with the pull of a group.

At 7, your child's key is Gene Key 7, the key of Guidance. This page is for you, the adult watching your child start to steer the kids around them, sometimes well, sometimes not yet. Here is what this year can teach both of you about leading.

The shape of your year

  1. Shadow Division

The days your child has a good idea and keeps it to themselves, worried about being laughed at, or swings the other way and bosses everyone around until nobody wants to play. That is Division, and either direction leaves your child lonelier.

  2. Gift Guidance

The days your child speaks up with a plan the whole group actually wants, where to play, how to split something fairly. That is Guidance, and it has nothing to do with being the loudest kid in the room.

  3. Siddhi Virtue

The rare day your child leads so naturally that nobody notices they are leading at all, they just notice things going well. That is Virtue, and it tends to show up once your child stops needing credit for it.

Your child is a creator. You help choose the fuel.

Your child's voice in a group runs on one of two fuels this year, love or fear, and the good ideas are in there either way. What changes is whether your child shares them, and how.

Run on fear, Guidance turns into Division. Your child might stay quiet about a better idea because speaking up once went badly, or swing the other way and order the other kids around, refusing to hear anyone else's plan.

Run on love, that same instinct becomes real Guidance. Your child speaks up and also asks what the other kids think, so the group gets somewhere good together. Stay steady with love this year and Guidance can open into Virtue, leading so gently it barely looks like leading at all.

How your year at 7 may unfold

  1. The first months: noticing what's fair

Your child starts noticing when a game or a turn is not fair before any adult points it out, even if they do not say anything yet.

  2. The middle: speaking up out loud

Your child starts trying an idea out loud instead of keeping it inside, and is often surprised when the other kids actually listen.

  3. The turn: suggesting instead of ordering

Somewhere this year your child finds a way to offer an idea instead of demanding one, and the other kids follow because they want to, not because they have to.

  4. The last months: being the one others trust

By 8, other kids may start asking what your child thinks before deciding something. That kind of trust gets earned slowly, and you will have watched it happen.

Your companion this year: Gene Key 13

Gene Key 13: Discord · Discernment · Empathy

Every Gene Key has a partner that keeps it balanced. For 7, that partner is Gene Key 13, the key of Discernment. Gene Key 7 wants to lead. Gene Key 13 is the pause that comes first, really hearing the other kids before offering a plan, so your child's guidance ends up being something the group actually needs.

Questions to carry through the year

  • What idea did my child share today that they almost kept to themselves?
  • When did another kid follow my child's lead, and how did my child react to that?
  • Did my child listen to someone else's idea today, even when their own felt better?
  • What kind of leader do I want to help my child become by 8?

Happy 7th birthday to your young guide. May this year help their good ideas find their way out loud.
