Happy Birthday

Your 6!

A year of small disagreements that teach big skills, one at a time.

Somebody who loves your family sent you this page. Happy birthday to your little one.

There are 64 Gene Keys, and every age up to 64 has one waiting for it. This year's is Gene Key 6.

Your child just turned 6. Think back on this last year: a new classroom, new friends, new rules to learn at school. A lot changed fast, and your child handled more of it than most adults would in a single month.

At 6, your child's key is Gene Key 6, the key of Diplomacy. This page is written for you, the parent steering a year that will be full of squabbles, make-ups, and real growth in how your child gets along with people.

The shape of your year

  1. Shadow Conflict

The days a small disagreement turns into tears, yelling, or someone storming off to their room. That is Conflict, and it will show up more than once this year, at home and at school.

  2. Gift Diplomacy

The days your child finds a way through a fight on their own, a trade, a sorry, an idea both kids like better. That is Diplomacy, and it is a skill they are building, not a trait they were born with.

  3. Siddhi Peace

The rare moment a fight actually leaves two kids closer than before. That is Peace, and you may only catch it once or twice this year, but it is worth naming out loud when you do.

Your child is a creator. You help choose the fuel.

Friendships and sibling fights this year run on one of two fuels, love or fear, and a lot of that fuel starts in your own house. Your child reads your tone before they understand your words.

When fear is running the house, Diplomacy slides back into Conflict. Your child might hold in a hurt feeling until it comes out sideways, a slammed door, a meltdown over something small. Or they swing the other way and say the meanest thing they can think of the moment they are upset.

When love is running the house, that same strong feeling turns into Diplomacy. Your child learns to name what is bothering them before it piles up, because they have watched you do the same. Keep choosing love and Diplomacy can open into Peace, fights that end with both kids understanding each other a little better.

How your year at 6 may unfold

  1. The first months: real disagreements

Somewhere this year a friend will take a turn that was not theirs, or say something that stings. Some kids cry, some kids hit, some go quiet. All of it is normal at 6, and all of it is new ground for your child.

  2. The middle: trying new words

Around now your child starts testing phrases like that hurt my feelings instead of just reacting. Some early tries will land badly. Praise the attempt more than how well it worked.

  3. The turn: the first apology

At some point this year your child says sorry first, or asks to be friends again, even after being sure they were right. That moment matters more than almost anything else in this year.

  4. The last months: a friendship that survived

By 7, your child will likely have at least one friendship that got through a real fight and came out stronger. That is Diplomacy taking root, with you nearby to water it.

Your companion this year: Gene Key 36

Gene Key 36: Turbulence · Humanity · Compassion

Every Gene Key has a partner that keeps it balanced. For 6, that partner is Gene Key 36, the key of Humanity. Gene Key 6 can get tangled in its own big feelings. Gene Key 36 reminds the household that everyone carries hard feelings sometimes, which makes it easier to stay in the room instead of shutting the door.

Questions to carry through the year

  • What did my child's last disagreement look like, and how did it end?
  • Do I model saying sorry first, or do I wait until I am sure I am right?
  • Whose rules about conflict is my child actually learning from, mine or the playground's?
  • What kind of peacemaker do I want to help my child become by 7?

Happy 6th birthday to your small diplomat in training. May this year's fights stay short and the friendships that follow stay strong.
