Somebody who loves your family sent you this page. Happy birthday to your little one.
There are 64 Gene Keys, and every age up to 64 has one waiting for it. This year's is Gene Key 4.
At 4, your child's key is Gene Key 4, the key of Understanding. Think back on the year you just had: pretend games that turned into whole invented worlds, and the first real why questions landing. This year the questions get bigger, and so does the need to make sense of people.
This page is written for you, the one answering all those questions. Gene Key 4 is about understanding why people do what they do. At 4, your child is starting to learn that skill, slowly, the way all of us do.
The shape of your year
- Shadow Intolerance
Some days a sibling or a friend does something your child can't make sense of, and they decide that kid is simply wrong and stop listening.
- Gift Understanding
Other days your child stops, actually thinks about why someone did what they did, and the anger melts away because it finally makes sense.
- Siddhi Forgiveness
Once in a while your child lets something go completely and goes right back to playing, no sulking, no grudge. Grown-ups spend years trying to get that good at it.
Your child is a creator. You help choose the fuel.
Gene Key 4 runs on love or fear too. At 4, you can see it in which questions your child keeps asking, and how.
Run on fear, your child might shut down a hard question with a flat I don't care, or go the other way and pick apart everything a sibling or friend does until nobody wants to play anymore. In the house, that same fear can make a grown-up too worn out to explain anything, or turn into a parent who nitpicks every little thing right back.
Run on love, that same sharp mind turns into Understanding. Your child asks why, actually listens to the answer, and things that used to seem unfair start to make sense. Keep that love flowing and Understanding opens into Forgiveness, where your child can be upset for a minute and then genuinely done with it.
How your year at 4 may unfold
-
The first months: why, why, why
The questions keep coming, faster than you can always answer. Keep answering what you can. The asking matters more than a perfect answer.
-
The middle: seeing someone else's side
Somewhere this year your child starts to guess what a friend or sibling is feeling, not just what they themselves feel. That's a big mental leap, and it won't be steady yet.
-
The turn: working out a fight
Arguments with friends start to end in talking, sometimes without a grown-up stepping in. It won't happen every time. Watch for the first time it does.
-
The last months: letting go faster
By the next birthday your child will likely be quicker to forgive a friend and slower to hold a grudge, and playtime will get back to normal faster than it used to.
Your companion this year: Gene Key 49
Gene Key 49: Reaction · Revolution · Rebirth
Every Gene Key has a partner that keeps it balanced. For 4, that partner is Gene Key 49, the key of Revolution. When your child's mind decides something is simply wrong and won't budge, a change of plan usually breaks the stall. Offering a new way to see it, for them and for you, moves things along faster than holding your ground.
Questions to carry through the year
- What question stumped me today, and how did I answer it?
- Was there a moment my child got mad, then understood, and let it go?
- Who did I forgive today, even a little, in front of my child?
- What question do I want my child to keep asking once they turn five?
Happy 4th birthday to your four-year-old. May every why this year bring you both a little closer to understanding.
